Week Course
This workshop is ideal for artists, photographers, and creatives interested in exploring screen printing techniques using photographic imagery. You’ll learn how to use photographic techniques, such as emulsion exposure, colour mixing, and half-toning, to create multi-layered prints that are both detailed and visually striking, yet simplified through the use of just two colours.

What you will learn during the workshop

The Basics of Screenprinting

You will acquire a full understanding of the core principles of silkscreen printing, including the use of a mesh screen, squeegee, and ink.

You will learn how to print on various materials, such as paper, fabric, wood, or other substrates.

Photographic Techniques in Screen Printing

You will learn how to prepare a screen using light-sensitive photo emulsion, which allows you to transfer detailed images (photographs or high-contrast artwork) onto the screen.

Creating the Two-Colour Print

You will learn how to split a photographic image into two layers for a two-colour print. This can involve using a halftone pattern, or other methods, to break the image into two distinct colour areas.

You will learn how to achieve colour separation, using software or hand techniques to separate the image into two layers (such as light and dark), which will be printed one after the other.

You will learn how to align the two layers so that the final print has depth and contrast without muddling the details.

Screen Preparation:

You will be given step-by-step instructions for applying emulsion to the screen, ensuring an even coating that can hold the photographic image.

You will be shown how to expose the screen to UV light with your film or transparency on top, using an exposure unit set to specific timings, to transfer your image onto the screen.

Printing with Two Colours

You will learn how to choose, mix and prepare the two colours of ink you will use for printing, based on decisions regarding their opacity, vibrancy, and how well they work together.

You will learn how to use registration marks to align the two layers perfectly during the printing process.

Troubleshooting

You will understand how to adjust exposure times and troubleshoot issues that can affect the quality of the transfer, such as underexposure or overexposure.

You will be given tips for managing registration and ensuring both colours fit together without misalignment or blurring

Post-Printing Processes

You will understand the drying process for screen prints, including how to cure the ink for durability(using heat, air drying, etc.)

You will be shown how to clean screens and tools properly to avoid damage and maintain the longevity of your materials.

What you will need to bring

All tools, materials and paper will be provided (A3 size). To help you with your decision-making, once you have signed up for the course and paid your fees, you will be sent a PDF document that gives examples of the sorts of images that work well in creative film making.

NB: For this workshop, you will need to send us your design at least a week before the workshop date. If you need any help, or if you have some questions regarding preparation of your visuals, please do not hesitate to get in touch .
