What you can expect to gain from the workshop
You will acquire a full understanding of the following elements of the silkscreen process:
Basics of the process
How stencils are used to create prints on various surfaces such as paper, fabric, or wood.
Key elements needed for silkscreen printing, including screens, squeegees, inks, and emulsion.
Creating handmade stencils
Techniques for designing and crafting your own stencils by hand (cutting, drawing).
How to achieve different textures and effects using hand-cut stencils.
Tools and materials to use for stencil creation, such as scalpels, stencil paper, Indian ink.
Working with stencil film
How to prepare and treat film (such as acetate or transparency sheets).
Using hand-painted methods to create film negatives that will transfer your artwork to a screen.
Different approaches to applying paint or ink on film to create intricate designs or detailed artwork.
Preparing screens for printing
How to coat a screen with emulsion to make it ready for printing.
Exposing the screen to UV light with your stencil or painted film design to create a permanent image on the screen.
Printing Processes
How to properly set up and register the screen onto your printing surface.
Techniques for applying ink to the screen and pulling it through with a squeegee to create your print.
Troubleshooting common printing issues such as smudging, misalignment, or uneven ink coverage.
What you will need to bring
All tools, materials and paper will be provided (A3 size). To help with yourdecision-making, once you have signed up for the course and paid your fees, you will be sent a PDF document that gives examples of the sorts of images that work well in creatiing stencil film.
Your Tutor
Greta Haga is an artist and printmaker who has worked for renowned print studios such as Coriander, The Curwen and Counter Editions at Carl Freedman Gallery. She has over 10 years of experience working in the screenprinting industry.
